Stan Welsh, Alibi, 2010, terra-cotta clay, photograph, ply-wood, rope, 48" x 32" x 8"
Sculptor Stan Welsh will present a selection of mixed media and ceramic sculptures, including works from the Water Series. This series titled “On Land-On Water” pays homage to those locations where water meets land or in more symbolical terms, where the known meets the unknown. In these landscapes, the artist is trying to create enigmatic spaces that evoke a perception of distance and emptiness. He places the figure into the landscape to create a sense of longing vulnerability and perhaps anxiety wondering what the future might bring. He portrays the disenfranchisement of nature where the central figure becomes a lost and weary traveler in a world that has become unfamiliar and void of meaning. In some an empty space is created in hopes of creating an emotional tension where the viewer is asked to place themself into the landscape.
