Born in Sheffield, England, Edwin Deakin (1838–1923) moved to San Francisco in 1870 and began producing beautiful, romantic depictions of California’s early architecture and picturesque scenes of its wilderness. Equally stunning—as this notecard selection attests—are his works inspired by trips to Europe in 1877 and 1888, including views of Notre Dame in Paris and the Castle of Chillon on Lake Geneva.
Edward Hopper (American, 1882–1967) built his paintings around light. “I like long shadows and early and late sunlight. I am very much interested in light, and particularly sunlight, trying to paint sunlight without eliminating the form under it, if I can.”
Born near Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, in 1887, a tiny village bordering the great north woods in the last century, Georgia O'Keeffe became a giant of twentieth-century modern art and the first American woman painter to gain unanimous respect from both critics and the public the world over. Better known for her floral and fruit still life paintings, these full landscapes are enchanting.
With the 1975 publication of his groundbreaking book Cat, B. Kliban (1935-1990) took his place among history's most eminent cat cartoonists. His bigger-than-a-breadbox, wannabe-dignified, arguably unhinged tabbies have delighted generations of feline fanciers, appearing on everything from greeting cards to baby clothing to beach towels.
Born in Southern California, Robert Kushner moved to New York City in 1972 and became a founder of the Pattern and Decoration movement. His early works, painted on unstretched cloth, were often worn as costumes for performances.
