She holds a Master of Arts degree from San Francisco State University and is the former owner and instructor of My Art School. She currently teaches art at the Triton Museum of Art in Santa Clara, California. As an educator, Mei-Ying encourages students to become the best versions of themselves by promoting self-empowerment, the belief that individuals can take charge and change the world for the better. This philosophy is evident in her own paintings, which depict strong, confident figures infused with energy and dynamism. Lorraine Lawson Lorraine Lawson is a California based fine artist whose work explores abstraction, memory, and the layered textures of lived experience. Working primarily in painting and mixed media, her practice draws on material history, intuitive mark-making, and a deep sensitivity to place and time. Her work has been exhibited at institutions and galleries including the Triton Museum of Art, Crocker Art Museum, Oceanside Museum of Art, Sanchez Art Center, Whitney Modern, and MK Contemporary Art Gallery, and is held in private and corporate collections. In addition to her exhibition history, Lawson is actively engaged in arts advocacy, mentorship, and community-based programming, including workshops for youth and public art initiatives that connect contemporary art with broader audiences. As a juror, she brings a thoughtful and balanced perspective, valuing originality, craftsmanship, conceptual clarity, and authenticity, with particular attention to work that successfully integrates technical skill with emotional and visual resonance. Preston Metcalf Preston Metcalf is the Executive Director of the Triton Museum of Art. A long-time Curator of Art, he has curated more than 400 museum exhibitions of artists, both here and abroad. In addition to his 36 years with the Triton Museum, he was also a lecturer of Art History at Mission College in Santa Clara, and San Jose City College. He has lectured on art and art history both locally and abroad, has had more than 60 articles and essays published, and had his first novel, Casanova, Curator of Memories published in 2018. Through his innovative art and education programs at the Triton Museum, thousands of our region’s children, youth, and adults have received fundamental art education and experiences, including award winning programs such as sculpture classes for the blind, hospital bedside art instruction for chronically and terminally ill children, and art/literary crossover programs such as the Triton’s immensely popular monthly Triton Book Club, which explores how both art and literature continue to shape our views. He sees art not as a static form of entertainment, but rather as world expanding experiences, bringing new views, ideas, considerations, and voices into our lives.

Mythical ideals such as Elysium, a paradise of heroic souls; the Garden of Hesperides, land of immortality; and Arcadia, the realm in pastoral harmony and simplicity tickle the imagination. Shangri-La suggests a hidden paradise, while Avalon holds a paradisiacal realm of eternal youth and abundance where King Arther awaits. The list goes on, but to these I would add one more – the ethereal landscapes of Victoria Veedell. I have long admired Victoria’s distinctive landscapes, increasingly believing I am transported to other-worldliness when viewing them. How she developed her stylistic dreamscapes, I do not know, but they move me. Are they filtered memories of vistas once viewed and rendered through the lens of time, or are they distant views of a promising future yet to be fully experienced? These are questions Victoria invites me to ask, and a journey of realization I am happy to travel.“ Curator's Choice: Vanessa Callanta, Curator Michael Kerbow Shadowplay (2026) Oil Painting “I kept coming back to this painting. I found myself looking at every building, every sign, thinking, “How much is too much?” It made me upset because this is our reality. When are we going to realize that the way we’re living and consuming is not sustainable? I admire Mr. Kerbow for painting this. It’s not only technically beautiful, it’s extremely sobering and, I like to think (hope), a call to action. I hope we can do better, and I hope we act on that before it’s too late.” Curator's Choice: Bryan Callanta, Curator of Digital Programming Hugo Kobayashi With the Fish (2023) “This painting is beautiful, surreal, and dreamlike. The deep water the fish swims (floats) in gives way to a twilight settling over a quiet suburban home, blending the two worlds together. There is no one present to observe the fish above their home, but I wonder what it would be to look up and see it there – seemingly calm, yet startling. One has to wonder – is this a threat, a guardian, or something else…” Previous Next
- Visual Duets: The Art of Creating Together
MAY 16 - AUG 16To many, art may seem like a solitary activity – a way for us to pour our individual souls into whatever we choose to create while commenting on or escaping the world around us. But for others, the process of creating art is a collaborative effort – one where we can find joy in experiencing it with others. The Triton Museum of Art is proud to present Visual Duets: The Art of Creating Together. This group exhibition features the works of four significant and talented artist couples: David Einstein and Judith Cook – painting, mixed media Era and Donald (Aldo) Farnsworth - printmaking Ellen Konar and Steve Goldband - photography Tandem Painting (Suzette McDonough and James Whitehouse) - painting Each of these couples creates artwork in connection and conversation with each other. In their practices, they have learned the delicate balance of working with another creative to produce not only something that is unique to the pair, but something that also carries their individual voices. - Carbon Sinks, Plastic Swims
MAY 16 - AUG 9This series of animated films explores carbon and plastic materials in our environment. By documenting and transforming material experiments into animation, the works reveal how substances are shaped, altered, and circulated in our world. The exhibit invites viewers to consider the hidden relationships between carbon, plastic, and the environments they inhabit, highlighting the material origins and ecological impacts embedded within everyday substances. Plastic Ecosystem: Plastic Ecosystem follows the journey of “new marine life” in the oceans. Millions of tons of plastic litter the oceans, and we study them: the journey of a school of plastic spoons, the behavior of plastic bottles, the moods of plastic knives. This mockumentary captures a few surprising behaviors of plastic bags and forks that mimic natural wildlife. Split up into three different segments with the use of different lighting, this film is a vignette of the rich variety of “life” in this plastic ecosystem. Carbon Traces: Humans were once in harmony with nature but now exploit its resources. Overconsumption in all forms has led to an imbalance. As humans grow more disconnected, they face an existential crisis and strive to restore the balance.
