Artist Statement
My art is rooted in contemporary Romantic Realism, where the precision of classical painting meets the emotional depth, imagination, and poetic beauty of Romanticism. Working primarily in oil, I seek to transcend literal representation, capturing not only the visible world but also its emotional and symbolic dimensions.
My artistic vision is deeply shaped by my experience as a refugee, which heightened my awareness of life's fragility, the resilience of the human spirit, and the universal longing for freedom and belonging. These experiences inspire my exploration of nature as both subject and metaphor, reflecting the delicate balance between strength and vulnerability, beauty and adversity, freedom and limitation.
Whether portraying wildlife, landscapes, or the human figure, I strive to reveal the spirit and emotion beneath the surface. Through thoughtful composition, expressive light, rich color, and meticulous detail, I unite realism with imagination to create paintings that are both lifelike and poetic.
At the heart of my work is the belief that art can reveal truths beyond what the eye can see, awaken empathy, and inspire a deeper connection with nature and humanity. Through contemporary Romantic Realism, I celebrate the enduring beauty of the natural world, the resilience of life, and the timeless human pursuit of freedom, dignity, and hope.
About the Artist
Trung Cao is a Vietnamese-Chinese American artist based in Vallejo, California, whose work is rooted in resilience, imagination, and human connection. Born in Saigon in 1970, Trung’s early experiences as a refugee profoundly shaped his perspective on life and his understanding of art as a powerful source of expression, freedom, and hope.
A self-taught artist, Trung began forging his own creative path at a young age, guided by an innate need to express himself and a deep curiosity about the world of art. Rather than follow a conventional academic route, he pursued an independent journey of learning, studying the techniques and works of the Old Masters alongside contemporary artists he admires. This self directed approach continues to inform his artistic vision and evolving practice.
Drawing inspiration from his multicultural heritage and personal history, Trung views art as a universal language—one that transcends words, bridges cultural differences, and communicates the depth of human emotion and experience. His work embodies a lifelong belief in the transformative power of imagination and in art’s ability to inspire, connect, and create possibilities.
Trung’s work has been featured in galleries, museums, exhibitions, magazines, and books. Beyond his studio practice, he is dedicated to fostering creativity through teaching, fundraising, exhibitions, and community engagement. As a former vice president of a nonprofit art organization, he has helped strengthen connections between artists and their communities.
Today, Trung travels internationally to participate in solo exhibitions and art events, while continuing to create, teach, and advocate for the vital role of art in individual and community life. Through his work and community involvement, he seeks to inspire others to embrace their own creativity, recognize the beauty of diverse perspectives, and discover the freedom and hope that art can bring.
